About Blue Otter Wines - An independent wine merchant in the heart of Hitchin

Established initially as an online merchant in 2002, Blue Otter moved to its retail premises in Hitchin in 2011.  Originally envisioned as a 3 month ‘pop up’ we liked Hitchin so much we are still here 3 years later.

At the beginning the shop specialised in wine only.  We take as much pride in being able to offer wine that is perfect for that evening’s casual supper as we are a selection of old, rare and fine wines available by the single bottle.  Our wine covers a spectrum of styles, regions and prices but all are offered with a strong belief that they offer quality, value and a break from the norm.

After a short while we began to add a small range of British gins and vodkas as well as some limited lines of Scottish whisky to the shelves.  These ranges have expanded greatly since then and include such curios as English vodka made 100% from milk to French Whiskey.  A further recent addition to the shop is in the introduction of a small range of British craft beers.

What ties all of these together is an enthusiasm to champion great wines and spirits and to take away the perceived stuffiness and pretention that can over-shadow many people’s initial venture into the world of wine.
